Since 2024, in the name of development, dozens of trees have been cut down on and near the Common and dozens more are slated for removal.

Urban green spaces
• clean the air,
• reduce flooding by absorbing rainfall,
• cool our city during heat waves, and
• provide refuge for both people and wildlife.

We can try harder when it comes to cutting down trees with decades of growth behind them.

For many residents with little or no private outdoor space green space is essential. As population density grows, especially in the proximity of the Common, protecting urban green spaces has never been more urgent.

The Friends of Halifax Common shine a light on any attempt to reduce or encroach upon the Common. We monitor city council and its committees to stop any initiative that threatens this most significant natural environment in our urban core.
