Return the Common Land

In the past decade alone Halifax Common land has been taken for a garage, a hospital, a temporary stadium and multiple parking lots. There are no plans to return Common land to public use. The Common is 'shrinking' by the year when what we need is to reclaim and enhance the Common.

Reclaiming
Common Lands

We are fortunate to have the Halifax Common in the centre of our city. It is a great place to enjoy organized activities or just to hang out and watch the world go by.
FHC is committed to ensuring the Common remains open green space for all.
In the past decade alone, Common land has been taken up for
• a parkade,
• a hospital and
• a temporary stadium.
Living 'life as usual' will lead to further land loss. FHC lobbies city council, committees of council and even the provincial government to prevent any more give aways of Common land.

Why does FHC lobby the city?

Through targeted advocacy campaigns and public awareness initiatives, we focus on reclaiming Common lands that have been seized by city administrations and provincial authorities for other uses. We champion restoring these vital green spaces for environmental, recreational, and communal benefits.

Our multi-layered approach includes lobbying government agencies, organizing community outreach programs, and supporting legal actions when necessary to ensure these public lands remain accessible to all citizens as originally intended. We firmly believe that protecting and enhancing Common spaces isn't just about conservation—it's about safeguarding democratic access to shared urban environments and maintaining ecological balance in our increasingly developed city.
