Caring for our Common
Friends of the Halifax Common (FHC) is a member-based registered charity to preserve and protect the Halifax Common for use by the public as greenspace.
It is our goal to both protect and restore Common lands. Based on our research and consultation, FHC shares information with the public to assist residents in voicing concerns over environmental and social repercussions resulting from decisions made by HRM City Hall.
We invite you to learn more about FHC and find your own way to participate in our activities. Each year we grow larger and our voice is heard in more places by more people. Join us to help our voice grow even stronger. Become the newest "Friend of Halifax Common".

What We Do

Friends of the Halifax Common (FHC) is Halifax’s only organization dedicated to protecting the Halifax Common—a mission we’ve carried out since 2006.

Protect

Research shows that green space is healthy for all people and for the environment. As such, the Halifax Common was granted to the citizens of Halifax in 1763 - green space owned not by the government but by the people.

Campaign

Over the years, hospitals, universities, and public institutions have expanded into Common space. We oppose the quiet transfer of citizen-owned Common lands for these developments.

Enhance

We advocate for natural and environmentally sustainable enhanments to the Common. As our Common is 'shrinking' by the year we aim to reclaim common lands now occupied by buildings and pavement.

We are all Treaty People

Friends of Halifax Common (FHC) acknowledge the location of the Common to be in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.
This territory is covered by the 'Treaties of Peace and Friendship' which the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725.
We honour the enduring presence and contributions of the Mi'kmaq people, and wish to foster meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
